BYOC LAN Party Planning - Spring 2007 Archives

Who

Hosted by ACM. Open to PCT and possibly Lyco.

What

Bring your own computer LAN Party.

Details:

What attendees are to bring

  • Desktop
    • Monitor
    • Power Strip (Preferably a surge protector)

OR

  • Laptop

AND

  • Network Cable, 25 ft recommended.
  • Mouse, Keyboard
  • Money for food
  • Waiver (or be prepared to fill it out upon arrival)

OPTIONAL

  • Chair (nothing big, or you will be asked to remove it)
    • Nothing bigger than an office type chair
      • Sloof is allowed to bring his La-Z-Boy

Network

  • 12-24port 10/100 Switch (with at least one gigabit uplink) per table
    • Gigabit uplink from table switch to core switch (possibly two, for redundancy or bonding)
    • Or 2 Fast Etherchannel Links
  • 2gbps uplink from primary server (two gigabit nics bonded)
    • New server will have 2 Broadcom gigabit NICs (PCI-e)

    • Other systems will probably be 100mbit, however we might have a few gigabit

Power

Seating

Servers

  • ACM Server
  • New ACM Server
  • Others?

If we can use the loft area as a NOC, that would increase security to the sensitive equipment.

  • Only issue with this is length of cables, and time to get down to the floor to correct and issue.

Power

  • Most LAN Parties (from my research on the web) require gamers to bring their own power strip. One outlet is provided per gamer.

Games

  • Consoles
    • PlayStation 2
      • DDR
      • Guitar Hero
  • PC Games
    • Enemy Territory
    • CounterStrike
    • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • We should poll people and get a majority vote
    • Two votes for Team Fortress Classic
    • I had someone mention F.E.A.R. Combat (which is free) for future LAN parties (BYOC too?)
  • We should be able to run multiple instances of a server. e.g. CS and TFC.

Food

  • Soda
    • Can we get soda at cheaper costs?
  • Pizza
    • Sponsorship/discounts for extreme bulk purchase?
      • Could hang a poster / have fliers available for a pizza place giving a decent price to us.
    • Dedicated person(s) to be ‘runners’ to pick up pizza/extra soda, plates, napkins, ice, etc. This will save waiting time and tip expense for pizza delivery.
    • Can we use one of food service’s portable oven/pizza warmers in order to have hot/warm pizza the entire time?
      • They used one at the card decorating.
      • People buy more when it is hot.
  • Bawls
  • Plates
  • Napkins/Paper Towels

Trash

  • Extra Trash Cans, bags
  • Recycle bins

Advertising Ubuntu

We can use this as an opportunity to advertise Ubuntu. The server, the massive beast that it is, will be running Ubuntu Server, and we can get some Edgy CDs to give out (it might be too late for shipit). We should also note that all the games can be played in Linux.

  • Hrm, just show off Beryl or something to them. — keyand57 2007/02/05 08:20
    • Splitting hairs, but Beryl will probably not be the default in Feisty, it’s a pretty poor application. I believe Compiz will be used instead. — daneva76 2007/02/06 02:21
      • I never said it would be included, but that it would attract attention. — keyand57 2007/02/06 07:52
      • Not all games can be played in linux... some can if its under WINE, but not always. — penbra67 2007/02/06 15:02
        • Sorry, by all the games I meant CS, UT2K4, and ET. — daneva76 2007/02/06 19:38
